What Brings About Agonizingly Slow Windows Startup

My computer has windows startup fairly fast around 60-70 seconds most of the time. Sure that is not newsworthy but most of my friends the ones who won’t follow my advice tell me that their computers take upwards of five minutes to start. To me that seems ridiculous but I know it happens more often than microsoft wants to admit. What causes the computer to take so long booting up & what can you do about it? These are two fitting questions & the answers are actually pretty straight forward.

Firstly what prompts the computer to start so slow? There are a number of things that contribute to the problem. Each one of them individualy adds a tiny bit more overhead to the process so correcting only one of the offenders will help a small amount & each additional area addressed helps a little more. The primary cause of slow boot times are startup programs windows prefetch temporary files clogged registry hard drive fragmentation low memory & malware. I will talk about each of these areas in turn.

Startup programs are just what the name says programs that are configured to fire up every time you boot your computer. Many of these are not required & certainly not desired. You can find good quality free tools to seek out & stop these programs very easily. A favorite of mine is the startup tool in CCLeaner. Google it & download it will help.

Low memory is another regular problem. Most of the computers you find these days do not come loaded with the largest amount of memory they can take. Do some research on your computer to learn how much you presently have installed & how much your computer can handle. Then go buy what you need to bring it up to max. This is one of the least expensive things you can do & yet it gives some of the most impressive performance gains.

Temporary files this one cracks me up because windows keeps your temporary files around forever if you dont get rid of them yourself. Those seem more like permanent files to me. A very easy solution here though is to use a tool you already downloaded CCleaner. The default function of this tool is to clean temporary files off your computer.

A clogged registry can seriously slow your computer down. The registry though is very essential piece of your operating system & changes here should be undertaken with extreme caution. You can buy or download free registry cleaners but I would leave registry changes to trained proffessionals.

Hard drive fragmentation is extremely common & is chief contributer to slow boot times. Download & install Smart Defrag. A very good free utility.

Malware which includes all forms of malicious software from Spyware to Viruses & everything in between are another major cause of long boot times.

Windows prefetch is folder that keeps files pertaining to your settings of most programs. With time these files grow to be out of date & filled with ineffective & erronious information. You should remove the contents of this folder if you have a trouble with a slow computer. This is an straight forward manual process.
