All About Data Backup
Your data is the treasure of your effort & can be lost in an instant & in the simplest way made a wrong click or a virus/malware program with a system of faulty installation or anything else.
If we are ordered to generate our data & we are in a directory tree in a logical manner as in the example on the right this is going to ease back later we must also bear in mind that whatever the storage use Data Backup tapes floppy disks CD-ROM removable … etc which can fail & therefore it ideal to use at least two alternatively use or once again a the other. For example we have a CD-RW for weeks & another pair for the odd.
There are many methods but the last thing I will comment on is the best & the fact that I use:
Diskettes.
Dedicated partition.
Another computer.
Tape drive.
Removable classical systems.
Rewrite CD-RWs.
Burning CD-Rs.
1. Diskettes
Is the most traditionally used because it requires no additional hardware but now has two serious drawbacks:
Unreliable
Floppies can be easily damaged.
Capacity
Capacity for the ridiculous file sizes of today if you are dedicated to video editing audio including MPEG-3 photography multimedia programming or even something as simple as taking a backup of messages or mail this option is probably not for you. Even if you do not do a lot of video editing audio etc you may still run into the problem of needing too many floppies.
2. Dedicated partition / Hard Disk
This option is highly recommended since it easily & cheaply storing the data in another physical location.
One problem with this is that a virus may be able to infect both of your hard disks if you are not careful. This is one reason why it recommended to use multiple backup methods.
3. Another computer
In this case we have another team if we can make use of parallel or serial cables cross or network cards. You can even take pictures of hard drive / partitions using programs like Nero or even Ghost linux commands like cat or dd the latter is somewhat more complicated .
You can also connect to your friend who has a CD writer.
4. Removable systems
Here I include a removable hard disks ZIP drives Jazz MO SuperDisk etc. allowing to use a few high capacity disks.
It is good & fast back-up system but for the most hits is the cost of disks. If you compare costs per MB you can back up between 20 & 100 times more data with a CD-R
Another important point is that to transport information to another computer you will also need to have the same type of device on the 2nd computer. This be expensive in certain cases.
Another great solution in this category is USB flash drives. They are cheap & most computers have USB drives these days. If your computer does not have a USB drive this is not a possible solution for you.
5. Tape drives
These were widely used in business especially in the past & are now in the catacombs of systems back-up. They are maddeningly slow system due to sequential access to information instead of using random other devices.
6. CD-R
This is simple & inexpensive way to make computer backups for a cheap price.
The biggest drawback is that when you make a copy of something you can not change & was therefore not appropriate for things that are updated a lot eg the messages from your mail account.
Also costs to fill a CD-R complete data unless special cases such as video editing.
7. CD-R/CD-RW ReWriter
This is the ideal medium because it has the advantages of the CD-R without its only drawback since you can also use CD-RW discs which can be changed like a floppy disk. Disks are 3 or 4 times more expensive but if they are data is updated often you will need to use CD-RW as appossed to using a large number of CD-R disks.
